YIHR BiH: the Pillar of Shame Project as a warning

Activists of the Youth Initiative for Human Rights in Bosnia and Herzegovina (Adi Omerbegović, Emir Hafizović, Amel Mukača, Nedim Jahić, Kerim Hadžimešić, Edin Kalender), together with many volunteers participated in packing and transporting of shoes for the Pillar of Shame Project in Srebrenica.

The Pillar of Shame is the project initiated by the Centre for Political Beauty in cooperation with the Mothers of Srebrenica. The purpose of this Project is to warn the international community and the United Nations, and to raise awareness of the world public about genocide in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The first phase of the project is completed with collection of 20 000 shoes , and it is expected that the first presentation will take place in Berlin, in front of Brandenburg Gate on 10 July, 2010.
Pillar of shame in shape of letters “U N” will be made of 16.744 collected shoes, next year in Potočari. The installation will also be engraved with the names of those responsible ones who could and failed to prevent the genocide in Srebrenica.

Youth Initiative for Human Rights herewith expresses fully support to awareness raising in relation to all war crimes committed in the Balkans during 90’s, and encourages facing the past and paying respect to all innocent victims regardless to their religious or ethnic denomination. We also want to express our appreciation to organizers who made us part of this great project and idea.
